Self-control
Self-control isn’t exactly the most talked about fruit of the Spirit. February 14th is all about Love. How about joy? Trust to find Nehemiah 8:10 in Instagram captions
But self-control? Not so much. The thing is, self-control is often the backbone that keeps all the other fruits in check. Without it, love turns selfish and peace becomes passive.
Galatians 5:22-23 tells us:
"[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”- NIV
Here’s the truth, self-control isn’t about suppressing who we are or being terrified of making a mistake. It’s about discipline that leads to freedom. Let me explain.
Why Does Self-Control Matter?
Proverbs 13:3 says
"[3] Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”
That clapback might feel good in the moment, but does it honor God? The answer is NO! Self-control helps you choose grace over being right.
Another reason why self control is important is because it guides our actions. Have you ever regretted a decision because you felt pressured to do it ? I've been there before.
But Titus 2:11-12 reminds us that,
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives.”
It’s not about perfection, it’s about aiming for God’s best for you.
How to Achieve Self-Control
1. Wait a Few Seconds Before Reacting
That extra 10 seconds before responding could be the difference between peace and a fight or chaos.
2. Stay Connected to God
John 15:4 reminds us to remain in Him, because apart from Him, we can’t bear fruit, including self-control.
In a world that glorifies instant gratification, practicing self-control might feel very hard to pull off, but it’s so worth it. After all, God isn’t asking for perfection.
Self-control isn’t about willpower alone. It’s about leaning on the Holy Spirit to guide you when your strength falls short. So the next time you’re tempted to get physical or to overeact to whatever it may be, remember that the Holy Spirit is always there to help you overcome it!

I love this 🥺
