The True Meaning of Love

Text: John 3:16, Matthew 22:39
It's that time of year again when we say love is in the air. Yes, it's Valentine's Day! A day when people set aside time to exchange gifts, write heartfelt messages, share flowers, and spend special moments with their loved ones to celebrate affection and companionship.
However, for some, this day brings feelings of sadness, loneliness, or pressure. Some may feel left out because they haven't received a gift, while others may rush into relationships just to have someone to celebrate with. But let me remind you, love is much deeper than a single day of gifts and romantic gestures.
My Dearest, have you ever paused to reflect on the greatest love of all? A love that goes beyond human affection, one that remains constant no matter the season?
There is someone who has loved you even before you took your first breath. He loved you even when you made mistakes, when you felt unworthy, and when you struggled to see your own value. His arms are always open to receive you, and His love is unconditional. That person is Jesus Christ.
John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
This is the ultimate expression of love—not just a fleeting emotion, but a deep, sacrificial, and eternal love. Jesus didn't love us because we were perfect; He loved us despite our imperfections. He willingly gave His life so that we could experience true freedom and joy. That is the kind of love that never fades, never fails, and never gives up on you.
*Love Yourself First*
Matthew 22:39 reminds us, "And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
Notice how this verse emphasizes loving yourself first. If you don’t truly love and appreciate yourself, how can you extend genuine love to others? Love starts from within. When you recognize your worth, value, and purpose, you will naturally begin to reflect that love onto those around you.
There are so many ways to practice self-love and appreciation:
📌 Accept yourself as you are. You are uniquely created, and every part of you is intentional. You don’t have to compare yourself to others. Embrace your strengths, acknowledge your growth, and be kind to yourself.
📌 Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Every step forward, no matter how little, is still progress. Be your own cheerleader! Don’t wait for others to affirm you—recognize and celebrate your achievements.
📌 Take care of yourself. Self-care is not selfish; it is necessary. Treat yourself to that special meal, take that break you deserve, or do something that brings you joy. Prioritizing your well-being helps you show up as your best self for others.
📌 Surround yourself with positive influences. Love is not just about romance—it includes family, friends, mentors, and those who uplift and support you. Be intentional about the relationships you nurture. Choose people who encourage you, inspire you, and remind you of your worth.
📌 Share love with others. Love is a gift meant to be shared, not just received. A kind word, a helping hand, or a simple act of kindness can make a world of difference in someone’s life.
While Valentine’s Day is a beautiful reminder to express love, we shouldn’t limit love to just one day a year. Love is meant to be a daily practice. Whether through kind words, thoughtful actions, or simply being present for someone, love is best shown in the little things we do every day.
So today, as you celebrate love, whether with a partner, friends, family, or even alone, remember this: You are deeply loved, not just by people, but by the One who created love itself. And as you embrace this truth, let it inspire you to love yourself and others more deeply, not just today, but always.
You are loved. You are cherished. You are enough.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
