FORGIVENESS
When I was younger, I was bullied in the hands of my peers. And, although i was young, I had an understanding of what Christianity demanded, so i tried as much as possible to forgive every time I got bullied. However, there was an incident that occurred where my social and emotional state of mind was scarred. That day, after my ordeal, I remember raising my eyes to the sky and placing a very dumb but serious curse on the perpetrators.
Of course, the Holy Spirit picked that moment to come and scold me. In the end, instead of me to be feeling anger at those people, I felt remorse for the fact that I had actually cursed- something I corrected others on doing all the time. For days, weeks, probably months, I forced myself to be able to look those bullies in the eye without itching to slap them. I learnt to forgive, and eventually forget. Yes, there are times when I remember the ordeal and I become a bit sad again, but i forgive those people again and again until the day I will feel nothing when this incident comes up.
“Why”, some will ask, “Can’t you just avenge yourself?”
In the New Testament of the Holy Bible, when Jesus was teaching the disciples how to pray He said “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”.
God forgives us every single time we wrong Him because of the express love He has for us. We are meant to love in the same way He loves, and that makes it very, very difficult not to forgive people. Love doesn’t want to avenge, it wants to forgive. And if someone full of love attempts to avenge him or herself, he or she will end up with more scars than the person that revenge is meant for. So don’t bother, my brother/sister, just take it to God in prayers.
The issue may be so dire that it hit you in the deepest point possible, but please, forgive. And until you actually forget, keep on forgiving. Do NOT revenge. That’s bringing yourself down to the level of those who hurt and revile and persecute you.
Remember, when you help your enemy, you are heaping hot coals upon his head. Forgive, my dear, and you will be giving the person who trespassed against you the worst punishment there is.
There’s another aspect of forgiveness you probably haven’t explored. Forgiving yourself.
Jesus says that He’s washed your sins away. He looks at you as if you’re the most beautiful thing in the universe, so why do you keep beating yourself for the things that occurred in the past. Jesus forgave your past!
He’s wiped that slate off your lifetime achievements. Don’t bring it back with your thoughts of guilt and worry and depression. Forgive yourself.
Please. You’re a new creature now, you know.
I pray that God helps you to do so in Jesus name. And may you be forever loving and forgiving in Jesus name.
Amen.
God bless you.
